Headache and Migraine Care in St. Augustine

Not all headaches have the same root cause, which is why the assessment matters more than the treatment. Tension headaches and cervicogenic headaches, meaning headaches originating from the neck, are often linked to muscle tension, poor posture and misalignment in the cervical spine. Those respond well to chiropractic care. Migraine is a more complex neurological condition, and we are careful about what we claim there.

Understanding headaches

A cervicogenic headache is head pain that is actually generated in the neck. When the joints and muscles of the cervical spine become restricted or irritated, they refer pain into the head, creating the pressure, tightness or throbbing many patients describe. Tension headaches share much of that mechanism, and both are common in people whose work involves long hours at a desk or looking down at a screen.

Are frequent headaches or migraines keeping you from the activities you love? Is constant head pressure, neck stiffness or shooting pain making it hard to get through the workday? If so, you are not alone, and the first useful step is working out which kind of headache you actually have.

Not all headaches have the same root cause, which is why an accurate assessment matters before starting treatment. the NINDS classification of headache disorders sets out how many distinct headache disorders there are and how differently they behave, which is the clearest argument against treating them all the same way.

The kind we are good at

Tension headaches and cervicogenic headaches, meaning headaches that originate from the neck, are often linked to muscle tension, poor posture and misalignment in the cervical spine. This is especially common in patients whose jobs require long hours sitting at a desk or looking down at a screen.

When the joints and muscles of the neck become restricted or irritated, they can refer pain into the head, creating the pressure, tightness or throbbing many patients describe. That is a mechanical problem with a mechanical answer, and it is the situation where chiropractic care does its best work here.

The kind we are careful about

Migraine is a more complex neurological condition and can have multiple triggers. It is not caused by the neck, and we will not tell you it is.

What is true is that many migraine sufferers also carry significant tension in the neck and upper back, and addressing that can be a useful part of a broader treatment approach. Reducing frequency and severity is a realistic goal. A cure is not one we will offer.

The changes that do the heavy lifting

Chiropractic adjustments work best alongside changes patients make in their daily lives. Depending on what your assessment shows, that plan may include posture correction for desk work and screen time, targeted stretches and strengthening for the neck and upper back, ergonomic setup recommendations for your workstation, and guidance on sleep position, hydration and other lifestyle factors linked to headache frequency.

By combining hands-on care with practical, sustainable habits, the goal is to reduce how often headaches show up and how much they disrupt your life, not just to treat the symptom in the moment.

Where the desk is the real driver, the headache is a symptom of a postural problem and is treated as one. There is more on that in our page on correcting the posture behind desk-related pain.

Symptoms people describe

  • Pain starting at the base of the skull and spreading forward
  • A band of pressure or tightness around the head
  • Headaches that arrive on the same side each time
  • Neck stiffness or reduced rotation alongside the headache
  • Pain triggered or worsened by sustained neck positions
  • Tenderness across the upper trapezius and the base of the skull
  • Headaches that build through the working day
  • Throbbing that eases when the neck is supported or moved

You do not need all of these. If two or three sound like your week, that is enough to be worth examining.

What causes it

Cervical spine restriction

When the joints of the neck become restricted or irritated, they refer pain into the head. This is the mechanism behind cervicogenic headache and it is the one chiropractic care is best positioned to address.

Sustained posture and screen time

Especially common in patients whose jobs require long hours sitting at a desk or looking down at a screen. The head weighs more the further forward it sits, and the muscles holding it there fatigue and refer pain upward.

Muscle tension in the neck and upper back

Trigger points in the upper trapezius, levator scapulae and suboccipital muscles refer pain into predictable areas of the head, which is why a knot between the shoulder blades can be the reason a headache keeps arriving.

Whiplash and past neck injury

A neck injured in a collision and left to heal stiff often becomes a headache generator months later, long after the original neck pain settled.

Migraine with a cervical component

Migraine is a neurological condition with multiple triggers, and it is not caused by the neck. But many migraine sufferers also carry significant tension in the neck and upper back, which chiropractic care can address as part of a broader treatment approach.

How we treat headaches in St. Augustine

We treat headaches by identifying what is actually driving them, then using gentle spinal adjustments and manual therapy to restore proper motion to the cervical spine, reduce muscle tension, and take pressure off irritated nerves and joints. Alongside that we build the ergonomic and movement changes that reduce how often the headaches arrive in the first place.

Recovery and how long it takes

Many patients experience noticeable relief in headache frequency and severity after a series of treatments, particularly when the headaches are tension-related or originate from the neck. That varies by patient and by underlying cause. Some people notice improvement within a few visits, while others benefit from a longer care plan. The measure we track is frequency and severity over weeks, not whether a single headache went away after a single visit.

Results vary. Any timeline is an expectation built from your exam, not a promise.

When it needs more than us

Book with a medical provider, or go to an emergency department, if you have any of these:

  • The worst headache of your life, or one that comes on suddenly like a thunderclap
  • Headache with fever, neck rigidity, a rash, or confusion
  • A headache after a head injury, particularly with drowsiness or vomiting
  • New weakness, vision loss, slurred speech or facial droop
  • A headache pattern that has changed markedly, or new headaches after age 50

Who you would be seeing

Dr. Sisak has worked with patients throughout the St. Augustine area on tension and cervicogenic headaches, and the approach starts with identifying what is actually driving yours. Just as important is what we do not claim: migraine is a neurological condition, we cannot cure it, and we would rather tell you that than sell you a plan built on a promise we cannot keep.

Care for this runs through our conditions we treat, so if the exam points somewhere other than where you expected, the right treatment is already in the building.

Questions we get asked

Can chiropractic care help with migraines?

Chiropractic care cannot cure migraines, but many patients find that addressing neck tension and cervical spine alignment reduces how often migraines occur and how severe they feel. It is often used alongside other migraine management strategies rather than as a standalone cure.

How many adjustments does it take to see headache relief?

This varies by patient and by the underlying cause of the headache. Some people notice improvement within a few visits, while others benefit from a longer care plan. Dr. Sisak will outline a personalized recommendation after your initial evaluation.

Is chiropractic care safe for chronic headache sufferers?

For most patients with tension-type or cervicogenic headaches, chiropractic care is a safe, non-invasive option. During your first visit we review your health history to make sure it is the right fit for you.

How do I know if my headache is coming from my neck?

Cervicogenic headaches typically start at the base of the skull, tend to stay on one side, and get worse with sustained neck positions or with pressure on specific spots in the neck. The examination tests exactly that: whether we can reproduce your headache by loading the structures in your neck. If we can, that is a strong indication.

Should I stop taking my headache medication?

That is a decision for whoever prescribed it, not for us. Nothing here is a reason to change a prescription, and we will not advise you to. What we will say is that frequent use of over-the-counter painkillers can itself drive a rebound headache pattern, which is worth raising with your doctor.

Will you take X-rays of my neck?

Sometimes. Imaging is used where we suspect degenerative change, past injury, or something that needs a closer look before treatment. It is not taken by default, and if it is recommended we will tell you what we are looking for and why the examination alone cannot answer it.
